Dental braces are used to help align the teeth and put it in a correct position. The procedure is under the branch of orthodontics in which its specialty is diagnosing, correcting and preventing malpositioned teeth. They are usually done by an orthodontist in the dental clinic. Patients will be required to frequently come back in order to adjust it and change its wires.

Types of Braces
Dental braces today has many types and can be used depending on the patient’s preferences. The types of braces include:
- Metal Conventional Braces: This is the most common type of braces and are usually very popular as they are cheaper than the other types. It comprises of elastic bands that has variety of colors and metal wires which uses the body’s heat to help the move quickly and be less painful.
- Ceramic Braces: This type of braces are similar to metal braces with the only difference being that its elatics and wires are tooth-colored or clear. This makes it less visible which is why it prefered by teens and adults.
- Lingual Braces: Like traditional braces, they have the similar function but are placed behind the teeth. Though they are hidden, these are very expensive and are not suitable for those who have complex complication. It also causes speech difficulties during the treatment process
- Aligners: Aligners are made-up of plastic material that also helps align the teeth without the use of elastic bands and wires. It has clear tray for the teeth which makes it invisible and appealing for those with aesthetic concerns.
Reasons for Using Braces
Most people today use braces to enhance their appearance yet what they don’t know that it used for many reasons such as:
- Treating open bite by aligning the teeth
- Crowding of teeth
- Bite complications which makes chewing difficult
- Crooked teeth that may lead to gum problems
- Speech problems due to spaces between the teeth.
- Frequent grinding of teeth
- Sleep apnea
Dentist classifies these problems into three classes in which all are treated by placing braces on the patients teeth. These classes are:
- Class 1: It is the relationship between the upper and lower teeth in which crowding or spacing is present in this class.
- Class 2: Overbite falls in this category wherein the lower first molar is placed posteriorly towards the back of the mouth while the upper jaw is more protruded forward.
- Class 3: Known as underbite, the first molar is closer to the front while the lower jaw is protruded forward.
Maintaining and Caring for Braces
Braces are placed for a long period of time which is why it essential to know how to take care of it properly in order to prevent any complications on the teeth. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing after every meal. A special toothbrush can be bought for braces to help clean it properly.
- Visit the dentist according to the agreed appointment or if there is anything that concerns your teeth. This is to ensure that the braces are adjusted and cleaned properly.
- Refrain from eating foods that may damage the braces such as candies, gum, ice and hard food.
- Avoid drinking carbonated drinks as it may damage the materials of the braces as well as your teeth.
